Summer celebrations: BBQ and Games with the George Square PostDocs

Calling all SBMS Postgrads and PostDocs!

To celebrate the end of another fantastic year, the Postgraduate Social Seminar Series will be joining forces with the George Square PostDocs to host a special BBQ and games in George Square gardens.

We'll be flippin' burgers, fryin' up hotdogs and pouring chilled drinks (yes that includes alcohol) so all you need to do is bring yourselves along, mingle and have fun! We're also going to have plenty of games, so make sure you bring your competitive side!

This will take place at 4.30 pm on the 6th of June, so please, cross your fingers for sunny weather. Maybe your toes too since this is Scotland were talking about!

Watch this space for more updates closer to the time.

See you all soon!

We're back!

Hi folks!

We're happy to announce the Postgraduate Social Seminar Series blog is back up and running! We will be posting monthly updates on our upcoming seminars, speakers and extracurricular activities so please stay tuned for updates!

As always the Social Seminar Series is dedicated to providing great seminar's each month with the usual shenanigans along with beer, pizza and other snacks and drinks. Seminar's will be held on the 2nd thursday of every month, and for now, we are located in G-6 in the Hugh Robson building.

G-6 is located on the ground floor next to the reception area in the Hugh Robson building. As you come into HRB turn right, walk through the opaque glass door (i.e. not the lecture theatre), and continue straight through the door.

Our next seminar will be held on the 13th of March 2014 which is just over 2 weeks from now. Details of the seminar including speakers and titles of each talk will be released within the next week.

Lastly, if anyone would like to help run the Seminar Series, or give a talk, please don't hesitate to contact myself (s.a.tennant@sms.ed.ac.uk) or any other committee representative to sign up or get more information. We always welcome a wide variety of speakers, from formal to informal, so don't be shy!

Thanks! We look forward to seeing you all at the Seminar Series.

The Postgraduate Social Seminar Series representatives,

Sarah, Peter, Ines and Hannah.

Friday 5 October 2012

Welcome Social

Our first session will be a social to get everybody back together after the summer and welcome our newcomers. Therefore we won't have any speakers and head straight to beer and pizza. It will take place on the 11th of October at 4:30.

Since our beautiful library has been turned into yet another e-phys lab (read: pit of despair) we have moved to room G-6.

G-6 is located on the ground floor next to the reception area. As you come into HRB turn right walk through the opaque glass door (i.e. not the lecture theatre), continue straight through the next door.

G-6 is smaller than the old library and if we find that there are too many people we will head up to the common room.

We are also looking for a new committee, as we have done this for a while and want to give others the chance to run the series while we focus on our respective PhD projects.

Organising the postgraduate seminar series is great fun, you get to know loads of people and is a nice thing to put on your CV regardless of what you do after your PhD/MSc/postdoc so I would encourage everybody to do it. I will provide more information during the welcome session.

See you on Thursday!
